Holding Together is about alliance — the people and groups you bind yourself to. The Chinese character shows two people side by side. Where Hexagram 6 asked whether to fight, this one asks whom to join.
The structure: Water over Earth
Water flowing over and into the earth. Two things that naturally belong together, which is why this hexagram reads well for partnership questions.
The Judgment
Holding Together brings good fortune. Inquire of the oracle once again whether you possess sublimity, constancy, and perseverance; then there is no blame. Those who are uncertain gradually join. Whoever comes too late meets with misfortune.
Two conditions are attached. Examine your own motive before joining, and do not arrive late — alliances have a moment, and it closes.
The Image
On the earth is water: the image of Holding Together. Thus the kings of antiquity bestowed the different states as fiefs and cultivated friendly relations with the feudal lords.
The lines
- Line 1 — Hold to him in truth and loyalty; no blame. Truth like a full earthen bowl.
- Line 2 — Hold to him inwardly. Perseverance brings good fortune.
- Line 3 — You hold to the wrong people.
- Line 4 — Hold to him outwardly as well. Perseverance brings good fortune.
- Line 5 — The king hunts on three sides and lets the game escape on the fourth. Good fortune.
- Line 6 — He finds no head for holding together. Misfortune.
Line 5 is the most quoted: the king drives game from three sides and deliberately leaves an escape. Union that is not coerced holds; union that traps everyone will eventually be tested.
The timing condition
The Judgment attaches a deadline that is easy to skip past: whoever comes too late meets with misfortune. Alliances are not available indefinitely. This is the hexagram's warning against holding back to keep your options open — the options close.
It pairs with the instruction to examine your own motive. Both conditions point at the same failure: joining late because you were waiting to be sure it was safe, which is not really joining at all.
Why the divination is conditional
The Judgment attaches a precondition that is easy to skip: inquire once more, and only if the answer is elevated, firm and correct is there no blame. Union is not inherently good — it depends entirely on what is being joined.
The Image makes the same point from the other side. The ancient kings did not create unity by decree; they enfeoffed feudal lords and cultivated relationships. The model is federation, not absorption, and it explains why line 5 leaves an escape route.
