Inner Truth is one of the I Ching's most quietly radical hexagrams. It describes influence that works through sincerity alone — no pressure, no coercion — and it makes a claim about why that works.
The structure: Wind over Lake
The lake below, wind above. Wind moving across still water, and the water answering. The image is of response rather than imposition.
The Judgment
Inner Truth. Pigs and fishes. Good fortune. It furthers one to cross the great water. Perseverance furthers.
Pigs and fishes are the least persuadable creatures available — which is precisely the point. Sincerity reaches what cannot be argued with.
The Image
Wind over lake: the image of Inner Truth. Thus the superior man discusses criminal cases in order to delay their execution.
The instruction is about the effect of genuine attention: even where judgement has been reached, sincerity produces hesitation rather than haste.
The lines
- Line 1 — Being prepared brings good fortune. If there are secret designs, one is disturbed.
- Line 2 — A crane calling in the shade. Its young answers it. I have a good goblet, I will share it with you.
- Line 3 — He finds a companion. Now he beats the drum, now he stops.
- Line 4 — The moon is nearly full. If the team horse disappears, no blame.
- Line 5 — He possesses truth, which links together. No blame.
- Line 6 — Cockcrow penetrating to heaven. Perseverance brings misfortune.
Line 6 is the caution that runs through the whole hexagram: sincerity can be overperformed. A crowing cock is audible a long way, and the text treats that as the failure case.
Why the centre matters
The structure is two yielding lines held between strong ones — openness kept in the middle. The claim is that influence works from that position rather than from display.
Which makes this a useful corrective reading: when outcomes are not landing, the text asks whether the sincerity is central or performed.
The crane in the shade
Line 2 carries the hexagram's central image: a crane calls where it cannot be seen, and its young answers. The point is that response follows sincerity without any visible signal.
Line 6 is the shadow side. A cockcrow reaches a long way, and reaching is not the same as being answered.
Pigs and fishes
The judgment's opening image is deliberately unflattering. What sincerity reaches is not the persuadable but the intractable — the creatures no argument would touch.
That is the claim the hexagram is making about method. Influence of this kind does not work by being convincing.
