The Gentle is wind doubled — influence that works by persistence rather than force. It is the I Ching's argument for the indirect approach, and it is moreassertive than the name suggests.
The structure: Wind over Wind
The same trigram twice: wind following wind. The repetition is what gives it effect — one gust does nothing, sustained pressure reshapes things.
The Judgment
The Gentle. Success through what is small. It furthers one to have somewhere to go. It furthers one to see the great man.
Small is the method, not the ambition. The instruction is to work through accumulation of small pressures rather than a single decisive act.
The Image
Winds following one upon the other: the image of The Gentle. Thus the superior man spreads his commands abroad and carries out his undertakings.
The instruction is about follow-through. Influence of this kind only works if each effort is actually carried out.
The lines
- Line 1 — In advancing and in retreating, the perseverance of a warrior furthers.
- Line 2 — Penetration under the bed. Priests and magicians are used in great number. Good fortune. No blame.
- Line 3 — Repeated penetration. Humiliation.
- Line 4 — Remorse vanishes. During the hunt three kinds of game are caught.
- Line 5 — Perseverance brings good fortune. Remorse vanishes. Nothing that does not further. No beginning, but an end.
- Line 6 — Penetration under the bed. He loses his property and his ax. Perseverance brings misfortune.
Line 3 is the caution: repeated penetration becomes humiliation. Persistence applied without judgement is insistence, not influence.
How to read it
The Gentle tends to describe situations where a frontal approach is not available or not appropriate, and where the effective move is patient and cumulative.
The Image supplies the discipline: commands followed by actual execution. Influence without follow-through is just weather.
Penetration, not passivity
The English name undersells the mechanism. Wind works by entering and persisting, and the text is describing a real method of influence rather than a mild temperament.
Line 3 supplies the limit. Repeated penetration turns into humiliation — the method fails when it becomes mere repetition.
Why wind doubles
Of the doubled trigrams, wind is the one where repetition is the mechanism rather than an intensifier. A single gust dissipates; sustained pressure does not.
That is why the Image pairs it with carrying undertakings through. Influence here accumulates only if each action is completed.
Commands carried out
The Image ends on execution rather than announcement. Sustained influence is what remains once each stated intention has actually been carried through.
