The Family is about the smallest unit of order, and the text treats it as the place where larger competence is formed. Wind comes out of fire: influence that spreads from a contained source.

The structure: Wind over Fire

Fire below, wind above. Warmth inside and something carrying it outward — the image of what happens in a household reaching beyond it.

The Judgment

The Family. The perseverance of the woman furthers.
Judgment

The judgment locates the work of holding things together in sustained attention rather than decisive action — which is why it names perseverance specifically.

The Image

Wind comes forth from fire: the image of The Family. Thus the superior man has substance in his words and duration in his way of life.

Two requirements: say what you mean, and keep doing it. Both are about consistency over time rather than intensity in the moment.

The lines

  • Line 1 — Firm seclusion within the family. Remorse disappears.
  • Line 2 — She should not follow her whims. She must attend within to the food. Perseverance brings good fortune.
  • Line 3 — When tempers flare in the family, too great severity brings remorse. Good fortune nonetheless.
  • Line 4 — She is the treasure of the house. Great good fortune.
  • Line 5 — As a king he approaches his family. Fear not. Good fortune.
  • Line 6 — His work commands respect. In the end good fortune comes.

Line 3 is the one with the nuance: severity produces remorse, and still the outcome is good. The text is acknowledging that there is no clean version of this.

How to read it

The Image supplies the practical test — substance in words, duration in conduct. Where either is missing at close range, it will be missing further out too.

Why the household comes first

The Image draws the conclusion explicitly: a person practises order where it is hardest to fake, and that practice is what carries outward.

Line 3 is the honest note. Too much severity causes remorse, and the text still calls the outcome good — there is no frictionless version of maintaining order.

Wind from fire

The Image is wind coming out of fire — heat generating its own draught. Influence that spreads from a contained source rather than being pushed outward.

Why the text starts inward

The line texts begin with seclusion and attention to ordinary provision — food, tempers, small daily order. The claim is that competence at scale is built here rather than demonstrated later.

Line 2 makes the same point from the practical side: attend to provision, do not follow whims.
