Darkening of the Light is the structural inverse of Progress and the harder of the two. Fire sits beneath the earth: the light is still there, but it is buried. The hexagram is about how to conduct yourself when clarity is not welcome.
The structure: Earth over Fire
Fire below, earth above. Brightness covered over rather than extinguished. The distinction matters — this is concealment, not loss.
The Judgment
Darkening of the Light. In adversity it furthers one to be persevering.
The advice is narrow and specific: keep going, and do not make it visible. This is not the hexagram for changing things.
The Image
The light has sunk into the earth: the image of Darkening of the Light. Thus does the superior man live with the great mass: he veils his light, yet still shines.
That closing paradox is the whole instruction: hidden, but not diminished.
The lines
- Line 1 — Darkening of the light during flight. He lowers his wings. He does not eat for three days, but he has somewhere to go.
- Line 2 — He is struck down in the left thigh. He gives aid with the strength of a horse. Good fortune.
- Line 3 — Darkening of the light during the hunt in the south. Their great leader is captured.
- Line 4 — He penetrates the left side of the belly. He gets at the very heart of the matter and leaves gate and courtyard.
- Line 5 — Darkening of the light like that of Prince Chi. Perseverance furthers.
- Line 6 — Not light but darkness. First he climbed up to heaven, then he fell into the depths of the earth.
Line 5 carries the historical reference that gives the hexagram its name: Prince Chi, who concealed his understanding and survived a tyrant by appearing to have lost it.
A caution
This hexagram is sometimes read as advice to hide your abilities permanently. The text does not say that. It describes a phase with a specific condition attached, and line 6 shows what happens when the darkness becomes the situation rather than the weather.
The example of Prince Chi
Line 5 is the historical anchor. Prince Chi served under a tyrant and survived by concealing that he understood what was happening. The text treats this as the correct conduct rather than as compromise.
Note that he did not leave and did not confront. The hexagram endorses a third option: remain, and keep the light covered.
