Most English speakers meet the I Ching through its text: you cast a hexagram, then read the judgment and the moving lines. Liu Yao (六爻) is a different tradition built on the same raw material. Same six lines, very different reading.
The difference in one sentence
Where the classical approach asks what the text says about your situation, Liu Yao asks which lines in the chart actually have force, and how they interact.
Where it comes from
The system traces to Jing Fang in the Han dynasty, who organised the sixty-four hexagrams into eight palaces and paired them with the heavenly stems and earthly branches. The Na Jia (納甲) method is the core of it: each line of each hexagram receives a stem and a branch, which gives it an element and a calendar position.
That step is what makes the system computable. Once every line carries an element, the five-element relations — generating and controlling — can be applied mechanically between any two lines. The classical text, by contrast, stays at the level of poetic situation description.
The moving parts
- Palace (卦宮) — one of eight groups; its element is the reference point for everything else.
- Six Relatives (六親) — the role a line plays relative to the palace element: parent, sibling, descendant, wealth, officer.
- Six Spirits (六神) — a flavour added from the day's stem: dragon, bird, hook, serpent, tiger, tortoise.
- Day and month — the casting date decides which lines are strong, void or broken.
How a reading proceeds
- Cast the six lines to get the primary hexagram and any moving lines.
- Assign each line its stem and branch from the palace table.
- Mark the World line (世) and the Response line (應) from the generation.
- Name each line's relative from the palace element.
- Note the month branch and day pillar, then check strength, void and break.
- Locate the significator (用神) for your question and judge its condition.
Why bother with it
The classical text is powerful but general — the same line text applies to everyone who draws it. Liu Yao is specific: it produces a chart with dated, interacting parts, which is why it became the dominant method for practical questions about timing and outcome.
A caution about both
Neither system is a forecasting instrument. Both describe a configuration and its tendencies. Anyone who tells you a hexagram guarantees a specific financial or romantic outcome is selling something.
