The Joyous is the lake doubled — pleasure, openness, the relief of something unclenched. It is a favourable hexagram, and the text is careful to distinguish real joy from its imitation.

The structure: Lake over Lake

The same trigram twice: water resting on water, mutually sustaining. The image is of refreshment that renews itself.

The Judgment

The Joyous. Success. Perseverance is favorable.
Judgment

The terseness is the point. Joy is self-justifying, and the only condition attached is that it be sustained rather than momentary.

The Image

Lakes resting one on the other: the image of The Joyous. Thus the superior man joins with his friends for discussion and practice.
Image

The instruction is social. Joy is described as something that happens between people working on the same thing rather than alone.

The lines

  • Line 1 — Contented joyousness. Good fortune.
  • Line 2 — Sincere joyousness. Good fortune. Remorse disappears.
  • Line 3 — Coming joyousness. Misfortune.
  • Line 4 — Joyousness that is weighed. Not at peace. But if one desists from minor faults, one may have cause for rejoicing.
  • Line 5 — Sincerity toward disintegrating influences is dangerous.
  • Line 6 — Seductive joyousness.

The arc is a study in joy's failure modes. Line 3 is joy that comes from outside; line 6 is joy that seduces. Only lines 1 and 2 are unambiguously good, and both are forms of sufficiency.

The test this hexagram applies

Line 5 is the one to remember: sincerity toward what is disintegrating is dangerous. Not all openness is a virtue, and the text is willing to say so plainly.

Which is what keeps The Joyous from being simply pleasant. It is asking whether the pleasure is genuine or borrowed from something that will not last.

Two lakes

The doubled lake is the image of water that refreshes by being shared. The Image draws a social conclusion: joy is something you practise with other people.

Line 2 makes the condition explicit — the joyousness has to be sincere for the remorse to disappear. Pleasure performed is not this hexagram.

Joy and its imitations

Lines 3 and 6 name two counterfeits: joy that depends on arrival, and joy that flatters. Both are described without comfort, which is what distinguishes this hexagram from reassurance.

Line 5 closes the argument — sincerity is not automatically a virtue, and directed at what is coming apart it becomes a liability.

Refreshment that renews

The doubled lake describes water that sustains by being drawn from. The Image's instruction — gather with friends for discussion and practice — treats joy as maintenance rather than reward.
