Opposition describes estrangement rather than conflict — fire moving up, water moving down, two things going separate ways without necessarily fighting. That distinction is what makes the hexagram useful.
The structure: Fire over Lake
The lake below, fire above. They move apart by their own nature, which is why the text treats this as a condition rather than a quarrel.
The Judgment
Opposition. In small matters, good fortune.
The qualification is the interesting part. Small things succeed during estrangement; large ones do not. Shared purpose is a prerequisite for big undertakings, and it is exactly what is missing here.
The Image
Above, fire; below, the lake: the image of Opposition. Thus amid all fellowship the superior man retains his individuality.
The instruction resolves the tension rather than avoiding it. Difference within unity is treated as the workable arrangement.
The lines
- Line 1 — Remorse disappears. If you lose your horse, do not run after it; it will come back of its own accord.
- Line 2 — One meets his lord in a narrow street. No blame.
- Line 3 — One sees the wagon dragged back, the oxen halted, a man's hair and nose cut off. Not a good beginning, but a good end.
- Line 4 — Isolated through opposition, one meets a like-minded man and can associate in good faith.
- Line 5 — Remorse disappears. The companion bites his way through the wrappings. If one goes to him, how could it be a mistake?
- Line 6 — Isolated through opposition, one sees one's companion as a pig covered with dirt. First one draws a bow, then one lays it aside.
The recurring movement across these lines is misrecognition resolving into recognition. Line 6 is the clearest case: the companion looks like an enemy until you stop aiming.
In practice
The text is notably unafraid of estrangement. It treats difference as survivable and generally temporary, provided nobody decides it is permanent.
Opposition in practice
The useful thing about this hexagram is its scope. It covers small matters with good fortune, which is most of what estrangement actually touches day to day.
The Image supplies the stance: retain your individuality amid fellowship. Difference is not the problem; the assumption that it must be resolved is.
Line 6 makes the point memorably — the companion who looks like a pig covered in dirt is not a robber, and putting down the bow is what reveals it.
Fire above, lake below
The two elements move apart without touching. That is the specific quality of this hexagram: not conflict, but divergence.
