Every Chinese divination system runs on the same engine: the five elements, or Wu Xing (五行). BaZi uses them for the Four Pillars, Liu Yao uses them for the six lines, and Chinese medicine uses them for the organs. Learn the two cycles and most of the terminology starts to make sense.
The generating cycle
Wood feeds Fire, Fire creates Earth (ash), Earth bears Metal, Metal condenses Water, Water nourishes Wood. In this cycle each element is the mother of the next and the child of the previous one. It is the relation of support.
The controlling cycle
Wood parts Earth, Earth dams Water, Water quenches Fire, Fire melts Metal, Metal cuts Wood. Control here is not destruction — it is the relation that keeps any element from running away with the chart. A system with only generation would have no brakes.
The five relations used in readings
Given any two elements, there are exactly five ways they can stand to each other, and the Ten Gods are just these five split by polarity. Read a chart by asking, for each element: does it feed me, drain me, restrain me, match me, or do I restrain it?
| Relation | Reading |
|---|---|
| It generates me | Support, shelter, but also dependency |
| I generate it | Output, expression, expenditure |
| It controls me | Pressure, authority, cost |
| I control it | Command, resource, what you can hold |
| Same as me | Company, competition, division |
When control goes wrong
Classical texts describe two failure modes worth knowing. Overacting (相乘) is control applied beyond what the target can absorb — a little Water extinguishes Fire, a flood destroys the hearth entirely. Insulting (相侮) is control reversing: normally Fire melts Metal, but enough Fire will shatter it. Both are ways of saying that the cycles describe proportion, not just direction.
Seasonal strength
An element is at its strongest in its own season and weakest when the season controls it. Wood peaks in spring, Fire in summer, Metal in autumn, Water in winter; Earth belongs to the transitions between seasons. Most strength calculations are applications of this single rule.
Why both cycles are needed
A system with only generation would have no brakes; a system with only control would have no growth. Classical texts run both together, which is why an element is usually described by what feeds it and what restrains it rather than in isolation.
Where you will meet this again
The same five relations reappear as the Ten Gods in BaZi and as the Six Relatives in Liu Yao. Learning them once covers all three.
