After Completion is the most balanced hexagram in the I Ching: every yang line is in a yang place and every yin line in a yin place. Order has been achieved. What is striking is that the text does not celebrate it.
The structure: Water over Fire
Fire below, water above. Heat beneath and coolness above it, which is the arrangement that cooks. Every line sits where it belongs.
The Judgment
After Completion. Success in small matters. Perseverance furthers. At the beginning good fortune, at the end disorder.
Success in small matters and disorder at the end. The warning is structural rather than moral: a perfectly ordered system has nowhere to go except out of order.
This is a recurring move in the I Ching. Peak hexagrams are routinely paired with cautions, because the text is describing dynamics rather than handing out fortunes. Hexagram 1 (The Creative) is pure yang and still comes with conditions.
The Image
Water over fire: the image of the condition in After Completion. Thus the superior man takes thought of misfortune and arms himself against it in advance.
The advice is prevention taken at the peak, not repair attempted after the fall.
The lines
- Line 1 — He brakes his wheels. He gets his tail in the water. No blame.
- Line 2 — The woman loses the curtain of her carriage. Do not run after it; it comes back.
- Line 3 — The Illustrious Ancestor attacked the land of the demon. After three years he conquered it.
- Line 4 — The finest clothes turn to rags. Be careful all day long.
- Line 5 — The neighbor in the east who slaughters an ox does not attain half as much happiness as the neighbor in the west with his small offering.
- Line 6 — He gets his head in the water. Danger.
The closing image inverts the opening of Hexagram 64, Before Completion. Ending and beginning sit next to each other in the sequence on purpose.
What to do with it
Read this as a maintenance instruction rather than a warning. Something has been brought into working order; the question is what it takes to keep it there. The text is unusually specific on that point — attention given at the peak, not after the decline has started.
The condition attached
Note that Supreme success arrives with a guard rather than a guarantee. The text pairs it with perseverance furthering and then warns explicitly that the end brings disorder. A completed configuration is a peak, and a peak is a position you hold rather than a place you rest.
