The Cauldron is the vessel in which raw material becomes nourishment. It follows Revolution in the sequence for a reason: once the old form has been shed, something has to hold the new one.

The structure: Fire over Wind

Wind below, fire above. Wood feeding a flame beneath a vessel — the arrangement of cooking rather than burning.

The Judgment

The Cauldron. Supreme good fortune. Success.
Judgment

Four words, and unusually unconditional. The vessel is auspicious because it serves — the quality is in the function rather than the object.

The Image

Fire over wood: the image of The Cauldron. Thus the superior man rectifies his position and makes firm his fate.

The instruction has two halves: take your position seriously, and consolidate it. A vessel that is not set level spills what it is given.

The lines

  • Line 1 — A cauldron with legs upturned. Furthering has removal of stagnant stuff.
  • Line 2 — There is food in the cauldron. My comrades are envious, but they cannot harm me. Good fortune.
  • Line 3 — The handle of the cauldron is altered. One is impeded in one's way of life.
  • Line 4 — The legs of the cauldron are broken. The prince's meal is spilled.
  • Line 5 — The cauldron has yellow handles, golden carrying rings. Perseverance furthers.
  • Line 6 — The cauldron has rings of jade. Great good fortune. Nothing that would not further.

The sequence runs through the parts of the vessel — legs, contents, handle, rings — and the outcomes track whether each part functions.

Why it follows Revolution

Overthrow removes a form but does not replace it. The Cauldron is the second half of the work: something has to be built that can sustain people afterward.

In a reading, this hexagram usually points to consolidation rather than initiation — the question is what you are going to carry it in.

The legs first

Lines 1 and 4 both concern the legs, and together they say something specific: a vessel that is not properly supported fails at the moment of use, not at the moment of construction.

Line 1 upturns them deliberately to remove what has gone stale — which is the hexagram's argument that overhaul is sometimes the maintenance.

Rectifying position

The Image's instruction has a physical basis: a cauldron set unevenly cannot hold its contents. Before worrying about what is put in, check that it is level.

Lines 5 and 6 then describe fittings of increasing quality — the vessel now able to carry what it is given.
