Gathering Together is about assembly — people collecting around a centre. The text is interested in what makes cohesion hold rather than merely happen.
The structure: Lake over Earth
Earth below, the lake above. Water collecting on the ground: the image of things pooling where the ground allows it.
The Judgment
Gathering Together. Success. The king approaches his temple. It furthers one to see the great man. This brings success. Perseverance furthers. To bring great offerings creates good fortune. It furthers one to undertake something.
Note what supplies the cohesion: the temple, the great man, the offering. Gathering is described as something organised around a shared object rather than an emergent property of a crowd.
The Image
Over the earth, the lake: the image of Gathering Together. Thus the superior man renews his weapons in order to meet the unforeseen.
The instruction is easy to misread as paranoia. It is closer to maintenance: where many things are collected, more can go wrong, and readiness is the cost of cohesion.
The lines
- Line 1 — If you are sincere, but not to the end, there will sometimes be confusion, sometimes gathering.
- Line 2 — Letting oneself be drawn brings good fortune and remains blameless.
- Line 3 — Gathering amid sighs. No blame. Slight humiliation.
- Line 4 — Great good fortune. No blame.
- Line 5 — If in gathering one has position, there is no remorse.
- Line 6 — Lamenting and sighing, floods of tears. No blame.
These lines are more varied than most, and the recurring theme is that gathering is emotionally complicated — sighs, lamentation, tears appear three times.
A note on the assembly
The Image's reference to weapons is the part readers remember, but the judgment's temple is the more important half. Cohesion needs somewhere to happen and something to be about.
Why the temple comes first
The Judgment names the temple, the great man and the offering before it says anything about the gathering itself. Cohesion is described as organised around something shared rather than arising from proximity.
That is why the Image pairs gathering with readiness. Where many things collect, more can go wrong, and maintenance is the price of the assembly holding.
Cohesion that holds
Line 5 supplies the condition: gathering works when those assembled have a position. Collection without placement produces the sighs and tears of lines 3 and 6 rather than the good fortune of line 4.
The offering
The judgment's instruction to bring great offerings is not about scale for its own sake. It names the mechanism by which a collection becomes a group: something is given, and it is given visibly.
