Deliverance is the structural answer to Obstruction — rain after the storm breaks, tension discharged. It is a favourable hexagram, and its instruction is narrower than the relief suggests.
The structure: Thunder over Water
Water below, thunder above. The storm has broken: thunder and rain together mean the pressure has released and the air is clearing.
The Judgment
Deliverance. The southwest furthers. If there is no longer anything where one has to go, return brings good fortune. If there is still something where one has to go, hastening brings good fortune.
The conditional structure is the whole point. Two different situations, two different instructions: if it is over, go home; if it is not, move now. The text is asking you to tell them apart.
The Image
Thunder and rain set in: the image of Deliverance. Thus the superior man pardons mistakes and forgives misdeeds.
The instruction is striking: relief should be followed by clemency, not by settling scores. The storm does not hold a grudge against the ground.
The lines
- Line 1 — Without blame.
- Line 2 — One kills three foxes in the field and receives a yellow arrow. Perseverance brings good fortune.
- Line 3 — If a man carries a burden on his back and nonetheless rides in a carriage, he encourages bandits to approach.
- Line 4 — Deliver yourself from your great toe. Then the companion comes, and him you can trust.
- Line 5 — If only the superior man can deliver himself, it brings good fortune.
- Line 6 — The prince shoots at a hawk on a high wall. He kills it. Everything serves to further.
The recurring figure is removal — of foxes, of a compromised ally, of a hawk. Deliverance is not only that pressure lifts but that what was exploiting it gets cleared out.
The timing test
The Judgment's two branches are the practical instruction. Confusing them is the common error: either lingering in a finished situation or rushing back into one that still has work in it.
Line 3 describes the opposite failure — displaying value you cannot defend. Relief is not the moment to advertise.
Storm vs. aftermath
The Image is thunder and rain setting in — the moment of release rather than what follows. That is why the hexagram's counsel is about pace: what you do in the first interval after a blockage clears tends to set the next period.
The pardon instruction belongs to the same logic. Clearing away what is finished matters more than assigning blame for it.
