Duration is about what persists — not stubbornness but the quality of continuing. It is the hexagram of marriage and of long undertakings, and it is more demanding than the reassuring judgment suggests.

The structure: Thunder over Wind

Wind below, thunder above. Movement within and movement above it, in the same direction — the image of motion that keeps going.

The Judgment

Duration. Success. No blame. Perseverance furthers. It furthers one to have somewhere to go.
Judgment

The final clause matters: duration is not repeating in place. Something that lasts is going somewhere, slowly.

The Image

Thunder and wind: the image of Duration. Thus the superior man stands firm and does not change his direction.

The instruction is consistency of direction rather than rigidity of method.

The lines

  • Line 1 — Seeking duration too hastily brings persistent misfortune. Nothing that would further.
  • Line 2 — Remorse disappears.
  • Line 3 — He who does not give duration to his character meets with disgrace. Perseverance brings humiliation.
  • Line 4 — No game in the field.
  • Line 5 — Giving duration to one's character through perseverance. Good fortune for a woman, misfortune for a man.
  • Line 6 — Restlessness as an enduring condition brings misfortune.

The surprising thing here is how few of the lines are clearly favourable. Duration is difficult, and the text does not pretend otherwise — lines 1, 3, 4 and 6 all describe getting it wrong in different ways.

A caution

Duration is not persistence in whatever you happen to be doing. Line 3 is explicit: duration belongs to character, not to activity.

Why most of these lines are difficult

Duration reads as a mild, reassuring hexagram until you count the outcomes. Of six lines, four are unfavourable or heavily qualified. That distribution is deliberate: continuing is harder than starting, and the text does not flatter the reader about it.

Line 5 is the most interesting case. Perseverance brings good fortune for a woman and misfortune for a man — a distinction that reads as a claim about flexibility within endurance rather than about gender.

Line 6 closes the arc by naming the real opposite of duration. It is not stopping; it is restlessness continuing indefinitely.

The trap of duration

The most common misreading is to treat duration as advice to continue whatever is already happening. The text resists that. Line 1 warns against forcing it, line 3 against lacking the character for it, and line 6 against restlessness that merely looks like persistence.
